大会レポート Tournament Report

This year, too, many Go fans, over 1,370 people, gathered.
From this year, there is a new service which is a big screen at the front of the game room. Till last year, there were many people at the back who could not see the stage. This year, what happened on the stage was shown on the big screen and the place was filled with a sense of togetherness.

At first, a commercial film of Ricoh was shown on the big screen and then the participants came up on the stage. To start the ceremony, Mr. Ichiro Yoshikuni, the honorary chairman of the Japan Pair Go Association made a speech.
Mr. Yoshikuni said, “Since the time I was a chairman of the Japan Pair Go Association, without the word, honorary, this is the 13th Championship. Thank you very much for coming today. Pair Go has started to be popular but overseas, “Igo” is “Go”. So, we are thinking of changing the name of our company in Japanese, “Nihon Pair Igo Kyokai”, to “Nihon Pair Go Kyokai”. Since the Pair Go was invented, Go has started to be more interesting. As in overseas, the game of bridge is played by a pair of a male
and a female, I hope everyone will invite your friends to play Pair Go. I hope everyone will love Pair Go in Japan, like bridge overseas. Please enjoy observing the professionals’ games, today.”

Then, Mr. Hiroshi Hamada, the supreme advisor of Ricoh Co. Ltd, the sponsor of the Championship, was introduced and after the participating professionals were introduced, Hideo Otake Honorary Gosei went up on the stage to make a speech to declare the opening.

Otake Honorary Gosei said, “I suppose some of you are excited to see many professionals today. For the professionals, they will be important games which will be recorded, so please do not disturb the games while observing. Also, please enjoy Micheal’s great commentary in the other room. I think you will be stronger by at least 3 stones. (laugh) Please enjoy and have a wonderful time. For the participants, all of you, good luck and win. Now, please start the game.”

The pairing of the 16 pairs which had been decided by lottery on the 18th of October (at Hotel Metropolitan Edmont in Iidabashi, Tokyo), was shown on the other page.
