Pair Go RICOH CUP 2008
Tournament Report

Till last year, the commentary was held next to the players. So that, whatever the commentator said was heard. The commentators had to be careful with the comments which they had to say vaguely and they could only say, "This one has an advantage." by pointing out black stones or white stones. But from this year, the tournament table is set apart and at the commentary room, there is no need to be careful. Soc Masaki Takemiya 9dan and Tomoko Ogawa 6dan said, "This year, we can say whatever we like. Let's tell a crazy story." "Yes."
The audience laughed before the game started.

What made this year's commentary room more lively was a screen. Above the Go board on the screen, there were the 4 faces of the players which showed their expression live. Takemiya 9dan said, gIt's good!h and made the audience laugh many times by explaining the expression of each player.

After nigiri, Osawa and Cho pair made the opening move.
Spirited Osawa and Cho pair and Shei Women's Honinbo were concentrating on the Go board. But Kono Tengen wore a poker face. Then, Takamiya 9dan started talking about Kono Tengen.
Takemiya 9dan said, "Kono kun doesn't look strong but he is strong. See, just him who looks as if he is looking at somebody else's game. Even though, others are serious. But he is strong." (Audience laughed)

On the Go board, from the beginning, Cho Judan's strict moves were remarkable. And that succeeded and the black were leading. But later, the white rolled back and then the black rolled backc The game went on to the half way without knowing who were leading.

Maybe because Cho Judan is in the middle of the Kisei best of seven title match, on this day, he seemed very spirited. Till the semifinal game, he was leaning on his partner and was showing a warm atmosphere. But, as the game went on to the half way, he started to be nervous about Osawa 3dan's move.
Takemiya 9dan said, "Ah, Cho san is getting angry. See, he looks at somewhere else." To this expression comment, the audience laughed so much. Takemiya 9dan said as if it was written on the Cho Judan's face and found out what he was thinking, "Ah, I wanted to place a stone there・・・" so whenever Cho Judan changed his expression, there was big laughter in the hall.

Because Cho Judan looked so nervous, I thought the black was inferior in number but in fact, the black kept leading. Osawa 3dan who was sitting next to Cho Judan did not look upset but seemed to enjoy playing the game.
Shei and Kono pair who was inferior on number never changed their expression.
When Takemiya 9dan said, "This pair seems very bold,", the audience laughed again to his expression comment.
The only time Shei and Kono pair changed their expression was when Cho Judan screamed. Osawa 3dan seemed to miss the move to win. To Cho Judan's scream, Osawa 3dan started to laugh and then Shei and Kono pair followed.

Even though the black missed, there was no change that the black was leading and the game seemed to end as it was. Takemiya 9dan, too, said, "The black won." But from then on, Shei and Kono showed persistence.
Many ko broke out and on the Go board, there were trades continuously. At each move, Ogawa 6dan said, "As the result, what is the situation?" to request Takemiya 9dan to calculate. There were so many changes that Takemiya 9dan screamed, "It is too hard to calculate!"

At the end, a big group of the black stones were taken the half left of the Go board. But on the half right of the Go board, there were many dead white stones. When Ogawa 6dan asked the audience, "Who do you think is wining, everyone?" about 80 percent of the audience put up hands for gthe whiteh.
What was the result of the very severe game with over 300 moves

Now the game was finished. While fans were thinking which pair won with bated breath, the 4 players were calculating and also were reviewing. It seemed something happened before the game end.
When Mukai 3dan finished calculating before the players did, she announced, "The black won with 1 and a half stones." There was a stir among the fans. Then, Cho Judan screamed, "What!!"
And then, he shook hands with Osawa 3dan. Then, Cho Judan raised his arms. Shei and Kono pair seemed regretful.
