November 10th (Saturday) Friendship games

« The goodwill match »
After the first round, a goodwill match in which professional players and Japanese amateur fans join in is held. The professionals are introduced individually and each one says a few words. Kimio Yamada 9-dan, a member of the winning team in the last professional Pair Go tournament, aroused laughter when he said: ‘My team may have won, but I don’t know what the knack of winning at Pair Go is. I intend to learn it today.’ The players who drew a professional as partner and the pair playing against them enjoyed this unusual experience.

Many of the pairs were wearing their national costume, making it a very colourful spectacle. Because it was a goodwill match, some games proceeded rapidly and were soon over. In this case, they could change partners and play a second game. This is another way of enjoying Pair Go. In fact, this might be a good way to run a Pair Go tournament with a small group, that is, having the players change partners each round – though it might be tough for the tournament organizer.

« Welcome Party »
After the goodwill match, the welcome party was held. All the 32 pairs greeted the audience and then assembled on the stage. Inevitably, there were some differences in the players’ expressions, depending on the results of the first round. In particular, the Japanese teams all aiming at victory that had been paired against each other were in quite different positions.

‘We’ll consider this as training and do our best tomorrow.’ This is how one pair reacted to defeat. Pair Go is not, after all, an individual sport, so consideration for one’s partner is important.
