Born in Osaka Prefecture on May 24, 1989. Disciple of Ishii Kunio 9-dan. Became 1-dan in 2002, promoted to 9-dan in 2009. Won the 34th Meijin title in 2009, the 49th Judan and the 37th Tengen in 2011. Won the 67th Honinbo, the 37th Gosei and the 60th Oza in 2012, the 37th Kisei in 2013 (the first player to hold six top titles simultaneously; also completing a cumulative grand slam of the top seven titles), and the 25th TV Asia title, also in 2013. Won the Professional Pair Go Championship 2014. Won the 54th Judan title (first player to complete a simultaneous grand slam). Won the 71st Honinbo title in 2016 (having won it five years in a row, he earned the title of Eternal Honinbo and took the name of Honinbo Monyu). Also won the 41st Gosei (having won it five times in a row, he qualified for the title of Honorary Gosei) in 2016. Won the 41st Kisei title (having won it five times in a row, he qualified for the title of Honorary Kisei) in 2017. Won the 1st Globis Cup World Igo U-20 in 2014 and the 39th King of the New Stars title. Entered the 39th Kisei League aged 16 years nine months, a record. Came second in the 62nd NHK Cup in 2015. Won the 25th Ryusei and challenged for the Tengen tournament in 2016. Came second in the 64th NHK Cup, challenged for the 43rd Tengen and the 65th Oza tournaments in 2017. Won the 21st Shinjin-O in 1996, the 9th Ryusei in 2000, the 60th Honinbo in 2005, and the 31st Meijin in 2006, becoming the sixth Meijin Honinbo. Won the 62nd Honinbo title in 2007 (having won it three times in a row, he took the name of Honinbo Shushin). Won the 46th Judan in 2008 and the 31st NEC Cup in 2012. Also won the 52nd Judan and the 40th Tengen in 2014, the 41st Meijin in 2016, and came second in the 24th Agon Kiriyama Cup in 2017. In total, has won the Meijin twice, Honinbo three times, Tengen once, and Judan twice.
